Question re: the M48 Patton at Monkey Depot

Post by Tinman » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:33 pm

To those who bought one (or more!) -

Is it the all-plastic one or is any of it diecast (metal)?

Also, are the driver's view ports painted (black), or just OD (not painted)?

I assume Monkeydepot's M48 is the Series II without a commander figure and snorkel and has a lighter paint scheme---hopefully, someone who has received their M48 from Monkeydepot can confirm this.
The Series I was discontinued some time ago.

Yep its all plastic. Not as light in color as the diecast one. No snorkel no driver.

It is the S2 version - plastic chassis and no driver.

Wouldn't it be S3 if there was a diecast model made between the first version and this version? Just wondering

Post by MG-42 » Sat Feb 14, 2009 10:21 pm

........ I still got one hell'uv'a deal on it though ,.. I'm happy. + 8)

.......... and "btw" ,.. the drivers view ports are a plastic molded (un-painted) "green". It says 2006 on the box too.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe there was a die cast version.

Thanks - I treasure my S1. Wanted the diecast version, but apparently not badly enough to pay when they were out! Don't feel like I need another plastic one.

Can anybody else verify that there was a 1/18 M-48 made? I can't recall ever seeing a metal 21C 1/18 vehicle.

You must consider the fact that sellers often mix and match the term "die cast" to refer to plastic and metal models. Can we agree the term "die cast" should refer to metal production??

BTW: The M-48 by 21C is one of my favorite pieces and just picked up two more from MD.

If 21C goes out of 1/18, due to MD there will be guys playing with their 1/18 and customizing their tanks for years to come. It's kind of like the "good old days" when 21C was cranking stuff out, one or two a year at very reasonable prices.

Picked up my M-48 at WM about a year and a half ago, it has a stamped metal upper hull, plastic turret, and no figures or snorkel. it ran me $38, and when you factor in the $16 shipping cost for the Monkey Depot M-48, there's really not that much difference in price.

I have 2 of the 1/18 die-cast hull M48s, one from WM, and one from a large batch of vehicles purchased from a fellow board member (who I suspect also got it from WM). I can also confirm - the die-cast version had no snorkel and no figure. I also have one of the plastic hulled M48's with snorkel, so both versions are out there, as well as a third version I have seen (apparently the one on MD) that has a plastic hull, no snorkel, and no figure.

So many variants, so little logic...

Sounds like there was an S3 then.. I have an S1 and S2 NIB, any suggestions on how to tell their content without opening them? :)

Guessing weighing them wouldn't be a good test due to the figures, snorkel bits and what not in the S1. Plus the packaging is very different.

What is the sku number on the bottom of one from MD? That and what year does it say on the bottom of the box?

The die-cast Tiger I had two figures with it... And the die-cast Bradley had one, as I recall.

I would love to mak an RC tank out of a metal one. The plastic version was nice for a toy.

S2 had a diecast upper hull, no snorkle and no crew. I have two at home, one of which is represented in my Photobucket Small Scales album.

Thanks MG, that's the same model number as the one I picked up in WM a while back. Is the hull diecast or plastic?

* Huh ? ... It's plastic ! ... Isn't yours ? * :?

......... now this is freakin' weird and it's starting to piss me off a little. The Pz.Iv has a die-cast hull and no indication on the box to designate it so , when it came out.

............ so WTF here ?

Yep. No indication on mine. The first run with no snorkle and no crew was diecast. There was a subsequent run that was all plastic. The only way to tell would be either to physicaly check it, or perhaps be able to tell the difference in color if still in the box.

Ditto here, diecast upper hull and deck, remainder plastic. I bought two of these at WM about 2 yrs. (give or take) ago for $38 ea. I've long since sent one off to ebay heaven, and the other is on display in a glass cabinet. It's a nice tank, but desperately needs some weathering, looks like it just rolled out of the factory paint shed...

That along with the unloaded suspension height takes something away from an otherwise good piece.

I wonder if anoyone has ever tried to monkey out correcting the suspension?
