Re: MIDWAY movie
Well at least they are making a WW2 movie and not changing History too much unlike the upcoming Tom Hanks movie "Greyhound" which changes the setting from the Royal Navy to the US Navy. And the Chinese Market that Hollywood kowtows to should be OK with "Midway" as it's the Japanese Navy being blown up.

Re: MIDWAY movie
Even if the action is over done and things like the TBD's carrying two additional bombs under their wings along with the torpedo is inaccurate, hopefully some school age kids will see what their great grandfather's generation sacrificed for them and that there are true heroes that aren't fictional characters and this flag is something to be proud of. Public schools don't instill that anymore.

Re: MIDWAY movie
That appears to be the same one dannyc posted. The bottom line is Hollywood vs. History is always going to be at odds. In order to entertain rather than educate, the make-up is going to be over done, actors faces will be perfectly lit even if the scene is in pitch dark, the laws of physics and science will be challenged and the pace quickened as to not be a slow paced documentary. It's a proven success formula that Hollywood has cashed in on forever. We history and accuracy geeks will always be able to nit pick while at the other end of the spectrum, most of the general public will have no appreciation for how close the accuracy even comes as they are clueless. And CGI will forever change the action as it lets the film maker make those changes to science and the laws of physics.dragon53 wrote:Here some guys discussing the accuracy of the trailer.

New article on how the script for MIDWAY was written.

Re: MIDWAY movie
This is a classic case of how stupid critics are. Either you have a historically accurate film and true characters or you can have a fictional script. You can't have it both ways. Make up your mind. Maybe this clown liked the completely fictional "Pearl Harbor" better? If you compliment the directors and filmmakers for sticking to the true story of true heroes, then don't complain that you have to make your script stick to the true story and true heroes. This guy also thought the film was too long while another guy said it couldn't be properly covered in one film and would have been better served as a multi part mini series. Go figure.

Re: MIDWAY movie
Reviews are starting to eat it up. Apparently with all the attention to detail on costumes and CGI vehicles, they forgot to write authentic 1940's dialog. One review said it would be better watched at home with the volume off.
Re: MIDWAY movie
The critics loved DUNKIRK. One even said it was probably the best war movie ever made.
I think DUNKIRK is one of the worst war movies I've ever seen.
I'll wait until it is released on bluray.

Re: MIDWAY movie
I'm wondering at what point major motion pictures will no longer be released on DVD and the rights picked up by streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. Or even only offered on thumb drives. There always seems to be a quest to make things obsolete to force you to spend money on the next technology.

Re: MIDWAY movie
I think the goal is to lock us into streaming so they retain control over the media and charge for every viewing. Disney has gone so far as to announce they are locking the Marvel movies behind their own service so you can't watch them anywhere else like Hulu or Netflix.

Re: MIDWAY movie
Another example of how "critics" are often out of touch with what paying customers think. I would never decide to see or not see a film based on one of those critic's opinions.

Re: MIDWAY movie
"Despite being widely panned, Roland Emmerich’s $100 million WWII epic “Midway” is heading for the No. 1 slot at the U.S. box office this weekend with an estimated $17.5 million for Lionsgate.
That’s significantly ahead of early tracking’s $13 million prediction. Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Ed Skrein, Nick Jonas, Patrick Wilson, Darren Criss, Aaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, and Dennis Quaid star in the independent film about the famed battle in the Pacific.
The film is coming out ahead of the Stephen King adaptation “Doctor Sleep” which is headed for a $13.5 million opening. That Mike Flanagan-directed film has scored very good reviews overall."

Re: MIDWAY movie
None of those numbers seem very impressive to me for an opening weekend.
Re: MIDWAY movie

Re: MIDWAY movie
Sorry, no Hellcats in 1942. Wildcats would have been nice as they were there for sure along with some Brewster Buffaloes.

Re: MIDWAY movie
Yea that was the big mistake in my book. Unless I missed something, I don’t recall seeing any in the movie
Re: MIDWAY movie
I enjoyed the movie and think the critics do not know what the hell they are talking about. Yes there were a few things wrong with the movie and yes they couldnt fit it all into the movie. But I think they did an amazing job telling the story of the gallant sailors, airmen, and marines at Midway. They left out another American airman who was executed by the Japs and the B-26 that flew across the deck of one of the IJN carriers but like I stated earlier they couldnt fit it all but still did a good job. My biggest gripe was the involvement of a Chinese production company

Re: MIDWAY movie
Getting a little off the topic but......
Just like farmers need cheap migrant workers, looks like the film industry is turning to cheaper production companies.
I can remember when I was young, products made in Asia were considered cheap junk. In my youth "Made in Japan" was the poster child for cheap product jokes. Japanese products started getting a better reputation with companies like Sony and Toyota making higher quality electronics and machinery. I also remember when South Korea started producing products like Sam Sung brand were scoffed as junk and relegated to discount stores. That's changed in the past 25 years. China now dominates Asian production in just about everything and world production in so many consumer durable goods except cars and aircraft. Even proud fabled companies like Schleich of Germany may have their name stamped on the bottom of their figures but it also says "made in China". Good luck finding any electronics, toys or seasonal Christmas products in any but the highest end retailer that's not made in china with a spattering of Malaysia, Indonesia, India and several other Asian sources. No China production - No toys like the ones on here we all covet.
We don't like it but it's the way of the world now.

Re: MIDWAY movie
The movie industry courts China not because of cheap labor but for the number of potential tickets sales that huge population represents. Involving Tencent is a way of finding access to those sales but it also involves having them guide scripts away from stepping over the party line. Star Wars and other recent big films have tanked there because the Chinese do not care for 'identity politics'. This occurs in the game industry as well, except those companies are bending over hard to please that market without regard to how it affects customers in less censorious countries. The West is moving towards streaming tech so China is the current place for expansion of theaters and that's who Hollywood is trying to cater to.

Thanks. That's what I get for assuming "made in China" always meant "cheaper".

Re: MIDWAY movie
For an example: Wizards of the Coast, owned by Hasbro, is the company that gave us Magic the Gathering. They have become snowflakes recently and have been changing the gender of characters in the game to please the Alphabet crowd or changing artwork to be 'female-friendly' i.e., cover the female art in clothes but turn the males into beefcake posters among other bullshit. They decided to make one character bisexual (because when I play a card game I give a hot crap about the sexual preferences of my cards, don't you?). Old school players complained about changing the characters for the very tiny minority of SJW snowflakes instead of just making a new character.
Well, China told them: Make her straight again or you can't sell your game here anymore. They bent the knee. In America we still have to suck it up and play with our LGBQT cards, but that is okay because I stopped buying the game from Hasbro and now buy Chinese fake cards based on the original card sets free of agenda. They are even of better card stock than what the U.S. company uses now.
I personally wash my hand of companies that follow the Socialist agenda. No more Gillette/Procter & Gamble, no more Disney, no more news media like CNN, NYT, ABC, etc. They want to live under Communism so bad they can move to China or Russia.
Oh no, they can't because the Communists imprison and/or kill people for the gender stuff.
