What makes the P-51 Mustang so special?

I have been shopping Goodwill in this fashion and have picked up some good deals. I have purchased a US medic's helmet which appears to be Vietnam era and a 1/32ish wood (possibly painted mahogany plane out of the Philipines or China) F-5 fighter. I began bidding on a 1/32ish wood F-16 but I stopped ultimately because I already have a different wood version and because I already have a 1/32 Revell. There are bargains to be found.
I have been monitoring the Militaria section because it is much smaller than the toy section.
