Pickel, just wanted to post another 229 pic ......look at the placement of the crooked cross, if the decal were placed there you wouldn't have to change anything. Thats what I had planned. I know its only a CG image but it looks good..... I'd recommend it in the instruction sheet.... but its your plane....

I got a chance to work on the bottom and I should be able to finish the whole center section on Sat.
Then on to the wings.
As far as the wings go i was just going to scribe the flaps and ailerons.
Or maybe cut them off so they can be posed.
Are separate posing control areas a must have or are you guys fine with scribing ?

What ever is easier. Unless the control surfaces move and can be positioned, I would just scribe them in. If I had to glue them in then I would just glue them in at the neutral pos. anyway.

At the risk of angering the gods of garage building by presuming to advise the maestro, I can see one reason to make the control surfaces separate parts. Super-builders might want the option of figuring out how to hinge them on their own. Depending on how the final wing assembly ends up being molded, I can see developing a hinge approach that could work, even if your original production doesn't accommodate a hinge.pickelhaube wrote:As far as the wings go i was just going to scribe the flaps and ailerons.

But, really, I think the over-riding consideration is whatever works best for you.

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Prototype Wing Input Needed
I'd be ok with scribed flaps and ailerons. The 1:72 and 1:48 Horten kits don't have pose-able control surfaces nor did 21st's P-51 and P-40 and their still great models. I can't wait to see this 229 with its wings on.
I'm thinking of making a few Ruhrstahl X-4 missiles for my 229s.
I like the way they look in this pic...

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Prototype Wing Input Needed
I guess when I get to the wings ( Sunday ? ) I will have to do what I have to do when I get there.
I have solved the screw head issue.
After you guys construct and paint all of the interior the main section will be held together with the construction screws. The way I have reworked the main section YOU SHOULD HAVE NO SEEMS TO FILL. I recut the front section on panel lines !!! There will be actually just a few things to glue on the whole project . Most of everything will be held together with screws.
Anyway when you have everything constructed you will have to come in through the side were the wing joins the main section and drill a sideways hole and screw the parts through the side. I will gouge a divot at the wing root so the assembly will sit flush. Take out the construction screws and putty the holes.
Does any of that make sense ?
Here are pics of detailed bottom and the semi finished engine intakes.
Everything has a little tweaking to get finished.
I also Have been thinking of making an end cap that will cover the wing saddle area in case anybody wants to pose their 229 wingless

Matthew, WOW! These pics look incredible, I can't get over the detail you've put into this so far.
We are watching history, the only 1:18 Horten kit being offered and we can see the step by step developments.
Now the hard part........which camo scheme to pick? I'll have to go back and look at all the 229 pics at the Luft '46 site.

I'm natural worrier. Seeing what a beautiful piece of work has been developing here, it just makes me cringe to think about making molds from it and trying to cast reproductions. I know I shouldn't be concerned, because it's PH, after all.normandy wrote:Matthew, WOW! These pics look incredible, I can't get over the detail you've put into this so far.

I've already decided I'm going to do dark grey and green splinter-ish on top and flat sky blue on the bottom.normandy wrote:Now the hard part........which camo scheme to pick? I'll have to go back and look at all the 229 pics at the Luft '46 site.

I think scribing the flaps and ailerons is fine. She's looking good Matt .

I have all of the panel lines done on the wings. The flaps and ailerons look like panel lines.
So I am going to cut the ailerons and flaps out.
With the wings on , this thing is pretty BIG !!
That is a 1/48 scale 229 on top

Matt: I'm enjoying this build thread so much, getting so much pleasure watching this gorgeous bird come to life, that I feel like we're getting our money's worth on the deposit just from the show. I'm basically a grumpy old man these days -- a pure treat like seeing these last pics is a rare pleasure!
Thank you, PH.

I keep looking the progress of this project and would like to say that this is one of the fantastic work of PH even it still WIP. Think about it is in my room (WOW! surely the biggest 1/18 in my room). I am now would like to see the details work in the cockpit and the final paint of this model.
